{NB: When I recorded this workshop, Mailchimp was my recommended email service provider for makers. That has now changed, and I recommend using Mailerlite instead. You can apply pretty much everything from this workshop to Mailerlite.}

This workshop, I’m taking you through the process of getting started with email marketing.

I discuss:

  • why email marketing is still so important
  • how to set up a list using mailing list software – we’re using Mailchimp
  • where to find the link to share with the world
  • exactly how to set up and send an email
  • some content ideas for emails
  • why unsubscribes are a good thing
  • AND I set you a challenge!!

If you decide to sign up for Mailchimp, make sure to use the links on this page, and both you and I get $30 credit towards our accounts.

Mailchimp is FREE to use for up to 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails per month.

If you’re already using email marketing, chances are you’ll already know most of what’s in this workshop – but don’t despair! I’m planning a ‘next level up’ workshop on email marketing for early 2016, so keep an eye out for that one.

Task: Send an email to your list within 48 hours of finishing this workshop – and share the link in the FB group!

P.S. Please forgive the occasional freezing on my webcam (the audio and the actual main video are fine) – I just upgraded my computer to Windows 10, and didn’t realise until after I recorded this that apparently my webcam doesn’t play well with it!

    Hi Jess,

That workshop was great, just what I needed. At my last market I collected a whole 9 email addresses and thought what is the point going thru the process of starting emailing people with only 9 . I must say though I did not try very hard to get them, I probably would had more people give me their addresses, but the whole emailing thing is very daunting to me, so I didnt put much effort into collecting them.
Anyway I am going to send a email out by the end of this weekend ( yes within 48 hours).
Also I was opting out of the Thriver Circle, but my $15 came out of my account yesterday, so If it ok with you can I stay longer, I think actually I need the support of the Thrivers and definatley your knowledge.
    Thankyou
    Kay

You’ve inspired me to get my mail chimp up and running. I had been using the integrated subscribe list on Wix, but it just doesn’t have much functionality. It has been a pain getting mail chimp onto my website, but I think it’ll be worth it when I can finally schedule my newsletters!

Hi! I didn’t understand your explanation about editing html. Maybe I will once I actually go in and produce my first email! Thanks so much for this workshop. Before this, I actually thought I could only have an email list within my website! Wish me luck! Thanks.

    Hey Jess,
I am trying to setup my first campaign so thought of just trying with sending email of my latest post once a week. Anyway I publish one tutorial post once a week, so something similar to yours I want people to get sneak peak of my post then they can click on read more which will direct them to that particular post on my blog. My question here is- I opted for RSS feed campaign, selected my list and other details but when it takes to design stage, it asks to write description for email, is there in way that it picks from post? or every week do I need to copy content from post, paste image? what is the solution, how do to you do it?

Hi Sheetal, sounds like a great idea! You should be able to use the RSS content block feature: http://kb.mailchimp.com/campaigns/content-blocks/use-rss-items-content-blocks

I do my emails manually each week (so I copy-paste from the post) but that is because I often add in extra content blocks (info about upcoming courses etc) so I don’t want my emails going out automatically.

Thank you Jess. Finally I have been able to setup my email newsletter. I found this plugin which solved my problem of automatically taking feature image of the post and put it in email – https://wordpress.org/plugins/mb-imagechimp-rss-feed-enhancer/
I hope it will be helpful for someone.
