[152] 7 Strategies for More (& Better) Reviews

This month’s member-exclusive episode was inspired by a question asked on our last Thriver Circle monthly call.

“How do I get more of my customers to leave reviews?”

I had a pretty lengthly answer on the call, and I realised… I have quite a few strategies that I use to improve the quality and quantity of customer reviews!

In this episode, I share 7 strategies you can implement to improve the number and positivity of your customer reviews – without bugging your customers.

During the month, share your experiences with these strategies over in the Facebook group using the hashtag #GetMoreReviews

Highlights and quotes from this episode:

  • Begin cultivating your customer relationship when your someone buys from you with a private conversation or email.
  • Invest time in developing an initial communication email template. Jess has included hers in the show notes below.
  • “Be excellent in your customer service but keep your boundaries.”
  • Jess replies to emails in set hours but ensures her customer service is top notch.
  • “Be excellent, be helpful, be kind”
  • When someone sends you a private thank you email rather than a review, respond and thank them and include information on leaving a review.
  • Explain what reviews mean to you and your business.
  • Use the relationships you have made on social media. Do a shout out and request reviews with a link and an explanation on why this is important.
  • “Be vulnerable and be honest – people will respond to that”
  • Do not incentivise leaving reviews.
  • Create awesome packaging that makes the arrival of your item feel like a present.
  • Include a handwritten thank you note with a gentle call to action such as “If you love your product…”
  • If you are really keen for extra reviews try the follow up.
  • A little after the person has received their item, send a brief pleasant follow up.
  • Check in with the buyer to ensure they are happy with the purchase. Don’t ask for a review but reinforce excellent customer service.

My ‘Thank You’ Message Template

I want to say a personal thank you for purchasing Epheriell jewellery! Your purchase means that me, my husband, and our kitties can keep living the life we love: waking up each morning as our own bosses, handmaking modern, recycled sterling silver jewellery from our solar-powered home studio.

YOU are the reason we get to live our dream – thank you. I’m honoured that out of all the things in all the world, you’ve chosen to spend your hard-earned money on one of our creations – that’s really amazingly fabulous of you.

Sometime in the next 1-2 weeks, my husband Nick and I will sit down in our jewellery studio in sunny Queensland, Australia, and handcraft your jewellery with care and passion. You’re not getting a pre-made stock piece – we’ll make your jewellery specifically and specially for you alone.

Once we’ve decided that your jewellery is as beautiful as we can possibly make it, Nick will carefully wrap it up, finish it with a ribbon tied in a bow, and slip it into a bubble mailer, in which it will safely nestle as it embarks upon its epic journey from our hands to yours. We’ll be in touch to let you know when it’s on its way.

As your abode is across the ocean from mine, this journey will take 2-4 weeks.

*** Please note that tracking isn’t included as standard with international orders. If you’d like to upgrade to include tracking, please let me know and I’ll notify you of the upgrade cost for your country.

Being able to talk and work directly with you is one of my absolute favourite things about being an artisan, so if you have any questions or requests, please message me at any time! I’ll reply within 24 hours (excluding weekends) and help you out in any way that I can.

In Happiness,
Jess

P.S. If you’d like to follow the Epheriell journey, you can connect with me on instagram (@Epheriell), AND, if you’d like notifications of new products and special treats, subscribe to our email list right here – eepurl.com/fsMfE.

The 2018 #PinterestChallenge!

Guess what are we doing this month?!

It’s time for this year’s #PinterestChallenge!

Those of you who’ve been in the Circle for over a year may remember this from last year (or even the year before).

The Challenge helped many of you grow your Pinterest accounts – and therefore, your website traffic.

Pinterest is one of the top drivers of traffic to my own businesses, and if you’re not already using it – or not using it to its full potential – this month’s Project aims to help you up your Pinterest game, and drive more people to your online store.

This month, I’m also doing a new member-exclusive podcast episode – The Power of Pinterest – to give you some more background on just why Pinterest is such a good choice to grow your business. (This will be available super-soon, I’ll link to it here once it’s done!)

We also have our own group board!

Click here and request to join the board by messaging me on Pinterest.

What is the #PinterestChallenge?

  1. Start by writing down your current Pinterest stats (boards, pins, likes, followers, following, monthly views) as of today.
  2. Make sure you have a BUSINESS account with stats enabled. And, if you can set up Rich Pins/Verification – do (but DON’T get bogged down in this step now if it seems too tricky).
  3. Commit to spending 10 minutes per day Pinteresting… 😀 (i.e pinning, re-pinning, liking, etc.). Ideally, set a reminder on your phone and stick to it.
  4. At the end of the month, come back and write down your stats again – and share your results with the Circle!
  5. Leave a comment under the Project post in the FB group if you’re committing to the challenge!
  6. BONUS – join our group board and also the public Create & Thrive Community board and be active on those. I have almost 12k followers, so that’s a great way to get a bit of traction, especially if you’re new to Pinterest.

This challenge will run the whole month of April, 2018.

If you haven’t taken it already, here is the original Pinterest Workshop video (you can see the whole workshop post here.)

I’m going to do this alongside you to see if I can get some more growth on my own account.

Good luck!

Feb Project 2018 – #EtsyRenewalProject

In the public January Q&A video, I had a lot of questions about Etsy pop up.

One of the issues that arose was the issue of renewing.

This is a marketing strategy that I have used right from the very beginning – when I opened my Etsy shop in 2008.

In my own personal experience? The more consistently I renew, the more sales I get. I personally see this as an advertising/marketing cost – and it’s got the biggest ROI of anything else I’ve tried.

If you’re not familiar with it, this is the process of going in and renewing products that are already active in your store (they have NOT expired). You basically ‘reset’ the timeline on them. This does not change the listing in any way – it just refreshes it so it has a brand-new four month life.

The theory behind this is that by renewing products, you get a ‘bump’ in the Etsy search results, as recency of listing is one of the factors their search algorithm takes into account when deciding where to rank you items. And, when this happens, people are therefore more likely to see – and click on – your listings.

During the video, I proposed the possibility of doing a project here in the Circle whereby those of us with Etsy shops would spend 1 month consistently renewing items, to see what effect it has on our traffic and sales.

So – now’s the time!

If you don’t yet have an Etsy shop (but would like to) remember – you can still take this opportunity to see what happens with the other members of the experiment. I think having a cohort of people all doing this at the same time will be a super-interesting exercise!

I’m publishing this well before the beginning of Feb so you have time to get organised and planned if you want to take part in this project.

If you’d like to participate, here’s the plan:

1. Go to the FB group and leave a comment under the #EtsyRenewalProject post so we know you are taking part. (I’ll be doing this in my own shop – Epheriell – as I have been a bit haphazard in my renewals of late.)

2. Choose a set number of products to renew every single day in February. I recommend at least 5 (which is $1 a day). But if you want to do more or less, that’s fine – the key is to do the SAME amount every single day.

3. Aim to do your renewals at the same time of day each day, just to give a more consistent result. Put an alert on your phone/in your calendar to remind you!

4. The brilliant thing about Etsy is that the stats are all there, easy to find. So, you can keep an eye on them as the month progresses. The aim is to see if your sales and traffic in February are significantly higher than January.

5. On Feb 1st, I’ll post a ‘starting stats’ thread in the FB group. If you are taking part, you are welcome to share your January numbers (views/visits/orders/revenue) if you choose. You are MORE than welcome to keep any or all of these numbers private, of course. The only thing I ask is that at the end of Feb, you do at least share some sort of data – even if it’s as simple as ‘yes, it increased my views and sales’ or ‘no, it did nothing’. The more of us that can share our results, the more data we’ll have to decide if this is a good strategy going forward!

Of course, there are always other factors at play. If you have been on Etsy a while, you can also use your past stats (Jan/Feb last year or earlier) to help you gague how much impact the renewal project has on your traffic and sales compared to the same period in past years.

A few suggestions on item choice.

I tend to renew my ‘mid-range’ products – that is, the ones that sell sometimes.

I generally don’t renew my best-sellers (because they are already selling and auto-renewing regularly). And, I’ll occasionally throw in some rarely-selling items to mix things up. Now, I have over 170 listings, so I have a lot of choice here. If you have a small amount, you may find you end up renewing basically your whole store during the month.

Obviously, the better your listings are to start with (photos, titles, descriptions, tags, etc.) the more effective this will be. I encourage you to use the time between now and Feb 1st to use EtsyRank and get your listings in tip-top condition.

Yes, I know this might skew the results slightly, so if you want to be super-scientific about them, you’ll actually leave your listings as they are now – but that choice is yours.

If you want to ask questions, share observations, etc. about this project during Feb and beyond, please make sure to use the hashtag #EtsyRenewalProject in your posts over on Facebook so we can easily find them!

Finally – like any project we do, participation is of course totally voluntary. Especially seeing as this project will have a monetary cost, please don’t feel any pressure to take part if it is not right for you at this time.

Okay, let’s do this!

Jess 🙂

November Project 2017 – Take 1 Marketing Action Each Day!

Happy November, all!

This month’s project is all about marketing.

Each day, I’m going to be sharing a different marketing prompt/idea with you over in the FB group.

This is the time of year to really work hard at being visible if you want to get people to buy your work for gifts!

No pressure to do each prompt when it comes up – do the ones that work for you, or save them for later.

However, I am going to encourage you to aim to take 1 marketing action every day through November.

At the end of the month I’ll share a pdf copy of all of the prompts so you can keep them for future reference!

If you have used that day’s prompt – feel free to tell us about it/share a link in the comments below.

Have fun!

Jess

P.S. Please feel free to keep using the #teamthrivercircle hashtag on instagram going forward! It’s a lovely way for us to connect with each other.

October Project 2017 – #TeamThriverCircle on Instagram!

Welcome to October!

With the holiday season fast approaching, I thought it would be a good time to do a fun project that won’t take too much time, and will help us all support each other’s marketing efforts.

Say hello to #TeamThriverCircle!

All through October, we’re going to be using the above hashtag to help us help each other. Here’s how it’s going to work.

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!

1. Through October, when you post a product promotion (this can be a product image, teaser image, promo image – basically, any photo on your IG that relates to your business directly) on Instagram, make sure to include the hashtag #TeamThriverCircle in the first comment.

2. Each day, when you hop on IG, take a few minutes to search the #TeamThriverCircle hashtag, and comment on at least 3 of your fellow Thriver Circle member’s posts.

3. If you want to comment/like more, go for it! The more we comment and like each others posts, the more we’ll help each other get more engagement and traction.

This shouldn’t take more than a few minutes a day, as it’s not like a traditional instagram ‘pod’ where every member has to comment on every post.

And, since there around 500 of us, if we all do it, we will see a huge boost for everyone!

If you plan on participating, head on over to this post on Facebook and share your IG handle there, too.

We’ll also focus on all things instagram this month – I’ll be sharing tips, links and advice, and please share your questions and success stories!

Have fun!

Jess 🙂

September Project 2017 – Get Ready for the Holidays!

It’s time to get ready for the busiest selling season of the year – the holidays!

Most of us either live in or sell to countries that celebrate Christmas/New Year.

For us, this is usually the busiest time of the year – which means it can also be the most stressful.

However, if we get prepared early, and plan ahead, we can avoid those ‘whoops’ moments and ensure we are ready to market our business effectively.

During September, we are going to work through the Handmade Biz Holiday Checklist below. You can download a pdf copy to print. You can also listen to the podcast episode where I go into more detail on each point.

Even if you’ve listened to it before, I encourage you to listen to it again! These tasks are things we have to do every year, so it will be a great way to refresh your memory, remind you of what you need to do, and get you motivated to be as prepared as possible to have a wonderful holiday sales season!
